best wordpress plugin backup solution for many big Wordpress websites

Background Information:
I manage 20+ Wordpress websites, some of them really large (60GB+) and currently I’m relying on my hosts for backups (big mistake, i know)

Is there any good automated plugin/software that takes regular backups and stores them on the cloud?

Importantly it should not store anything on the websites’ actual servers and should not use a lot of CPU. For example, Updraft was using a lot of resources when I tried it.

I'm using rsync and mysqldump scripts, on a Synology, with a daily cron. Than, send that to a S3 bucket (BackBlaze) via Synology HyperBackup to get x days of backup history.

Like this, I don't rely on a plugin and I can backup any kind of websites, WP or not. If you don't want to use a Synology, I suppose you can do the same with TrueNas.

For me, the downsides of a plugin is if your wordpress fail, due to an automatic update or something, will your backup will run? If you get hacked, is it possible to remotely remove your backups from the plugin interface? I find that it's better to split and let WordPress do his main job : display a website

Managing 20+ WordPress websites, including some massive 60GB+ installations, presents unique backup challenges that many hosting providers simply cannot handle effectively. Relying solely on host backups creates significant risk, especially when dealing with large-scale operations where downtime means substantial revenue loss. The search for automated backup solutions that store directly to cloud services without consuming server resources is a common pain point for WordPress professionals handling multiple large sites.

Server-Level Backup Solutions for Large WordPress Sites

Your current approach using rsync and mysqldump scripts on Synology with automated cloud storage represents a sophisticated server-level backup strategy that many WordPress professionals eventually adopt. This method completely bypasses WordPress plugins, eliminating resource consumption on your web servers while providing reliable backups for any website type. The separation of backup processes from WordPress itself ensures functionality even when WordPress experiences issues, whether from failed updates or security breaches. This approach to WordPress security configuration provides an additional layer of protection beyond standard plugin-based solutions.

Server-level backups using tools like Synology HyperBackup or TrueNAS offer significant advantages for large WordPress installations. These systems can handle massive file structures efficiently without impacting website performance, since backup processes run on separate hardware. The ability to maintain multiple backup versions in cloud storage like BackBlaze B2 provides comprehensive disaster recovery options. This method also addresses concerns about database security measures by keeping backup authentication separate from WordPress admin access.

How can I backup multiple WordPress sites automatically?

For WordPress professionals managing multiple sites, automated backup systems require careful planning and the right tools. Server-level solutions using cron jobs with rsync for files and mysqldump for databases provide reliable automation without WordPress plugin overhead. These scripts can be configured to run during low-traffic periods and automatically transfer backups to cloud storage services. The key advantage is centralized management of all site backups through a single control point rather than individual WordPress dashboards.

Many hosting providers offer multi-site backup solutions at the server level, though these vary significantly in quality and reliability. For those preferring commercial solutions, services like ManageWP, MainWP, or InfiniteWP provide centralized dashboards to manage backups across multiple WordPress installations. These platforms typically use their own servers to handle backup processing, eliminating resource drain on your web servers. Proper implementation of WordPress customization techniques can help optimize these backup processes for better performance across all managed sites.

What is the best cloud storage for WordPress backups?

Choosing cloud storage for WordPress backups involves balancing cost, reliability, and integration capabilities. Amazon S3 remains the industry standard with excellent reliability and extensive integration options, though pricing can become complex. BackBlaze B2 offers similar functionality at significantly lower costs, making it ideal for large backup sets from multiple WordPress sites. Google Cloud Storage and Microsoft Azure provide additional alternatives with strong global infrastructure.

The optimal cloud storage solution depends heavily on your specific backup strategy and recovery requirements. For those using server-level backup systems, compatibility with tools like rclone or native cloud storage APIs becomes crucial. Important considerations include data transfer costs, storage pricing tiers, and geographic redundancy options. Implementing proper malware removal procedures becomes easier when you have reliable cloud backups that are isolated from potentially compromised WordPress installations.

How much does WordPress backup service cost?

WordPress backup costs vary dramatically based on approach and scale. Plugin-based solutions typically range from $50-300 annually per site, while server-level backup systems involve initial setup time but lower ongoing expenses. For those managing 20+ large sites, the break-even point often favors investing in server infrastructure and cloud storage subscriptions rather than per-site plugin licenses.

Solution TypeInitial CostAnnual Cost (20 sites)Technical Requirements
Premium PluginsLow$1,000-2,000Basic WordPress knowledge
Managed ServicesNone$2,000-4,000Minimal technical skills
Server-Level SystemsModerate-High$500-1,000System administration skills

The most cost-effective approach typically involves combining server-level backup tools with affordable cloud storage. This eliminates per-site licensing fees while providing superior performance for large WordPress installations. The initial investment in setup time pays dividends through reduced ongoing costs and better reliability. Understanding design software comparisons can help inform decisions about resource allocation for backup infrastructure versus other business needs.

Are WordPress backup plugins safe to use?

WordPress backup plugins present both security benefits and potential vulnerabilities. Well-maintained plugins from reputable developers generally provide safe backup functionality, but they do introduce additional code to your WordPress installation. This expanded codebase potentially increases attack surface, though quality plugins undergo regular security audits and updates. The primary concern involves plugin accessibility through WordPress admin, which could be compromised during security incidents.

Server-level backup systems eliminate WordPress-specific security concerns by operating completely outside the WordPress environment. This separation ensures backup integrity even during WordPress compromises, as backup credentials and controls remain isolated. For those preferring plugin solutions, implementing strict social proof strategies when selecting plugins can help identify the most reliable options based on real user experiences rather than marketing claims.
